Country overview: Cape Verde is a group of small islands in the North Atlantic Ocean West Coast of Africa. Cape Verde is located near Senegal. It gained its independence from Portugal on 5 July 1975. Its constitutional capital is Praia with 22 Administrative divisions. It is a multiparty parliamentary democracy with the President elected by absolute majority popular vote and Prime Minister nominated by the National Assembly and appointed by the President. It runs unicameral national assembly as the legislative arm of the government. Portuguese is the official language but Crioulo is also popular. Christianity is the predominant religion. It practices the civil law legal system of Portugal. It has an area size of 4,033 sq km. The majority of the population of Cape Verde consist of mixed European and African descent.

Demographic Information: Cape Verde has an estimated population of 0.6 million with the younger population (less than 25 years) making up about 46.5% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up of  about 47.8% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up of about 5.8% of the population. The average population density is estimated at 124 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 75.6 years (Women) and 70.8 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 104.3% Primary enrolment rate in 2018 and overall literacy level of 86.8% as at 2018.

 

Broad Economic Overview: Cape Verde is a small economy that is highly dependent on Tourism. Tourism represent about 21% of GDP. The Cape Verde economy is heavily impacted by the economic situation in Europe, as most tourists are from Europe. Emigrants’ remittances are also important for the economy. It has consistently achieved a robust GDP growth in the past 5 years having grown 3.0% (5yr compound growth) over the period. Its currency is Escudo which is pegged to the euro.  The main export include fish, hides, garments, shoes etc. Major imports include fuel, foodstuffs, industrial products, transport equipment etc.  

 

Investment Opportunities: Cape Verde’s government recently instituted a plan to lower the risk of external debt by bringing down the country’s high public debt and the Strategic Plan for Sustainable Development (2017-2021)  aims to foster structural reforms and promote more sustainable and inclusive growth. Part of the plan includes privatisation of non-performing state-owned enterprises and creating public–private partnerships for large investment projects. The country is also seeking to transform the country into a hub for air and maritime transport. It intends to reduce its energy dependency by developing renewable energies and has pledged to obtain 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. Other sectors that offer opportunities to investors include Agribusiness, ICT’s, sea economy, tourism etc.
