Country overview: Namibia is located in Southern Africa bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with South Africa to the South & East, Angola and Zambia to the North, and Botswana to the East. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990. It is a Presidential Republic with the President sitting as the Head of State and Government.  Its capital is Windhoek and has an administrative structure divided into 14 regions. It runs a bicameral legislative system consisting of National Council and National Assembly. Namibia’s main ethnic groups are Ovambo, Kavangos, Herero and people of mixed European and African ancestry. English is the official language with 13 national languages recognised. Christianity is the major religion. It has a mixed legal system of civil law influenced by the Roman-Dutch model and a customary law. It has an area size of 0.824 million sq km dominated by the vast Kalahari Desert. The country’s geographical position provides investors with access to the regional market (SADC) of 16 countries with an estimated 200 million population and GDP of $600bn.
 

Demographic Information: Namibia has an estimated population of 2.6 million comprising mostly of younger population (less than 25 years) which makes up about 55.95% of the population, those in the age bracket of 25-64 years makes up about 40.15% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up about 3.9% of the population. Average population density is estimated at 2.97 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 67.3 years (Women) and 63.3 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 124.25% Primary enrolment rate in 2018 and overall literacy level of 91.5% as at 2018.

 

Broad Economic Overview: Namibia is a stable democracy having achieved political stability since its independence. Namibia has one of the most productive fishing industries in the world.  It is rich in natural resources as Diamonds account for almost 70% of all mining exports. It is the 5th largest producers of uranium globally accounting for 10% of world production. Namibia’s diverse landscapes and extensive wildlife offers significant tourism assets.  Tourism is a major source of income and contributes 14% of GDP. It is a market-oriented economy, and one of Africa’s highest sovereign credit ratings. Namibia’s economy is closely linked to South Africa’s and subdued economic conditions in South Africa has dampened the country’s economy. Real GDP, which peaked at 4.5% in 2015, contracted by an estimated -0.9% in 2019, following a 0.7% expansion in 2018. It managed to achieve a modest compound annual GDP growth of 2.4% in the past 5 years. Its currency is the Namibian Dollar which is pegged one-to-one to the South African Rand.  Main export includes copper, diamond, fish, gold, uranium, zinc, mollusks, lead etc. Major imports include petroleum product, foodstuff, machinery, metals product, equipment etc.  

 

Investment Opportunities: Namibia is one of the continent’s most peaceful and politically stable country with good infrastructure that rivals many developed countries. The country’s huge pool of institutional savings could finance high-return investments which could contribute to rapid, inclusive, and sustainable growth. Namibia has the potential to become the regional transport and logistics hub with the inauguration of Walvis Bay Container Terminal in 2019 which saw the terminal handling capacity more than doubled. With a well-developed transportation corridor, stand to derive global value chains benefits from a growing and dynamic regional market. Namibia government is pursuing reforms to improve the business environment, attract investment, and spur industrialization.
