Country overview: Mauritius is an island country located in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa and east of Madagascar. It gained independence from the United Kingdom on 12 March 1968. It is a Parliamentary Republic with its President sitting as the Chief of State and Prime Minister as the Head of Government. Its capital is Port Louis and it has 9 administrative districts. It runs a unicameral legislative system. There is no specified official language, but the country constitution recognises English as the official language of the National Assembly. Other popular languages spoken in the country include Creole, French, Bhojpuri. Hinduism and Christianity are the main religions whilst Islam is fairly well practiced in the country. It has a mixed legal system of civil law influenced by the French civil law and some element of English common law. It has an area size of 2,040 sq km. Mauritius has one of the region’s most efficient and transparent business environments and in 2019, it was  ranked as having the 9th most free economy in the world according to Economic Freedom of the World report.
Demographic Information: Mauritius has an estimated population of 1.38 million comprising mostly of a middle aged population (25-64) which makes up about 55.4% of the population, those in the younger age group  of 0-24 years makes up  about 33.5% of the population and above 65 years age group makes up about 11.1% of the population. Average population density is estimated at 626 inhabitants/km2. In terms of human development indicators, it has a life expectancy of 80.1 years (Women) and 73.0 years (Men). It achieved universal primary education with a 99.52% Primary enrolment rate in 2019 and overall literacy level of 91.3% as at 2018.
Broad Economic Overview: The Mauritian economy is largely service based (76% of GDP in 2019), followed by industry (21%) and agriculture (3%). In the service sector, tourism and financial services remain the most vital sectors (the number of tourist arrivals for 2019 stood at 1.38 million). Sugar production is the main driver of the agricultural sector but it is expanding into fish processing, ocean economy and higher value-added sectors such as agroprocessing. Textiles and apparel production are the main activities in the industrial sector of the economy. The country’s economy is diversified and relies on its offshore financial activity. The Mauritius economy grew at 3.0% in 2019 having achieved 3.7% compound annual GDP growth in the past 5 years. Its currency is the Mauritian Rupee. Main exports include sugar, textiles and clothing, fish, cut flowers etc. Major imports include petroleum product, foodstuff, manufactured goods, consumer goods, chemicals etc. 
Investment Opportunities: Mauritius has successfully transformed into a broad-based, diversified, innovation-driven and knowledge-driven economy based on agribusiness, export-oriented manufacturing, tourism, financial services, property development & real estate, ICT-BPO, Freeport & logistics and seafood. The government is positioning Mauritius as a gateway between Asia and Africa for trade and investment. It plans to further diversify its export markets which will see the country consolidate its position as a logistics and services hub for Africa and boost the wider economy. Mauritius represents an exemplary model of development as it ranks very high on various measures and standards of development globally. It ranks 9th out of 162 countries globally as the most free economy according to the Economic Freedom of the World 2019- (Fraser Institute) and 13th out of 190 countries as the country with most ease of doing business according to Word Bank Doing Business 2020. As the country seek to further its economy, there are investment opportunities available in agro industry, creative industry, education, financial services, healthcare, ICT, life sciences, logistic, manufacturing, ocean economy, real estate and hospitality, and renewable energy sectors.
